Summary
- No analytics, marketing, or other privacy-invading cookies (or any similar technologies) are used on this site
- There's more detail below about the data I collect and the data I store on your device
Data this site stores on your device
When you start your visit to this site, it will give you a cookie with your session ID. This cookie is strictly functional and doesn't contain any information about you; it's only used to recognise you as you move through pages throughout your visit and is necessary in case you sign in, as it's how I track your authentication status. In any case, it only lasts for the duration of your visit, and when you leave it's deleted automatically by your browser. You can reject this cookie, but if you do so you won't be able to sign in.
If you visit my wine cellar page, I store the state of your search filters on your device using local storage. This is purely for your convenience, as it means you can move away from that page and then come back to it later with your filters in the same state as they were previously. You're welcome to clear this data from your device any time, it won't affect the site in any way apart from resetting your filter selections next time you visit that page.
Data this site collects
Just like every site on the web, I capture activity on this site with my web server's built-in logging function. These log files contain:
- Your IP address
- The web browser you're using
- Each file you request, and the time and date you request it
- The response codes for your requests, so I know if they were successful or not
- The address of the page that sent you here, if you came from another website
I use these log files for understanding activity on my site, for identifying bots or people who are trying to find and exploit security holes, and for troubleshooting problems like missing pages.
Analytics
I use Cabin for site analytics. I highly recommend it. It has a privacy-first design so it doesn't use any cookies or browser fingerprinting, its script is tiny compared to Google Analytics, and it runs on 100% renewable energy.
It has a paid-for version if you want to track custom events or your site's carbon usage, but the free version is fine for me. If you run your own website and use Google Analytics at the moment then it's definitely worth a look.
